Apply to remain on the roll

We have reintroduced the requirement for all solicitors without a practising certificate to apply to remain on the roll each year. This is due to changes to laws on how personal data is handled and our need to make sure the data we hold is up to date.

There is a £20 administration fee to remain on the roll.

You can apply to remain on the roll from 3 April to 28 May 2023.

How to apply

Find out how to apply to remain on the roll.

Check FAQs about keeping of the roll if you have questions.

If you are working under section 88 (Solicitors Act 1974) as a solicitor without a practising certificate, you must apply to remain on the roll. Section 88 allows solicitors to work in a public department without the requirement to have a practising certificate, as long as they are on the roll.

The administration fee is £20, which covers the cost of the exercise and maintaining our records.

What happens if you don't apply

You will be removed from the roll when the application window closes. The length of the window reflects the eight week period we are required to provide before removing anyone from the roll.

You can only call yourself a solicitor without a practising certificate if you remain on the roll.

If you do not remain on the roll, you'll lose the benefits that being on the roll brings:

  • membership of the Law Society
  • the right to vote in Law Society Council elections
  • access to the Law Society library
  • discounts on Law Society products and services.
